Carter Hargrave a native Oklahoman and Professor or Grandmaster has had an extensive martial arts career. Carter Hargrave’s training began at an early at age of about seven years old at a Tulsa Martial Arts school with the auspicious instruction of Goju Ryu Karate Master Lou Angel while Hargrave lived in north Tulsa in the late sixties.
While Carter Hargrave found he still had a serious interest in martial arts, Hargrave found at age seven he just was not ready for the harsh training and long workouts that training required. Carter Hargrave returned when he was in high school in Texas where he knew others who were actively training and competing in the martial arts. Hargrave continued with his interest in martial arts upon his return to Tulsa Oklahoma.
Carter Hargrave was an assistant instructor at the Oklahoma Karate where he learned and taught International Tae Kwon Do and a form of Korean Ju Jitsu known as Kuk Sool. Carter Hargrave’s teacher was taught by Texas Blood and guts lineage of Dimitrius Havanas. It was at this school that one day a student of the Bruce Lee School in California introduced himself and wished to speak with the owners and instructors of the School.
During the introduction Carter Hargrave approached the visiting instructor and told him of his interest in the teachings of Lee. After the meeting a few weeks later a parent of one of the Kuk Sool students that Carter Hargrave taught invited him to his home to meet a friend. The friend was the same Bruce Lee School teacher that had come to Oklahoma Karate to meet the instructors. After his arrival the instructor asked Hargrave “I hear you are pretty good at Tae Kwon Do and Kuk Sool, so lets see what you've got” meaning lets spar. Hargrave began to kick and punch, moving about the floor, Hargrave did not really notice that he was not coming even close to striking the instructor of Bruce Lee’s art known as Jeet Kune Do.
It was years later that this same Instructor would be handing Carter Hargrave the Martial Arts Hall of Fame Jeet Kune Do Instructor of the Year Award.
Professor Carter Hargrave is now a Grandmaster in three martial arts styles, as well as holding black belt instructor rankings in seven systems. He now teaches at Hargrave Martial Arts in Oklahaoma.
